Sailing south in Norwegian Sea
Trondheim, one of Norway’s oldest cities, was founded by the Viking King Olaf. With a population of approximately 220,000, it is an attractive historic and modern city overlooking a picturesque fjord. We visited the Gothic style Nidaros Cathedral, dating back to the 12th century, with an impressive array of refurbished statuary recounting some very gruesome historical events, beheadings and such, that ultimately led to Olaf’s sainthood. Olaf was an original king of Norway and introduced Christianity to Norway. Pilgrims come from all over to worship here where Olaf is buried.
A beautiful panoramic view of Trondheim, the scenic river Mid, and wait for it…a fjord.
We were treated to a short piano recital at the Ringve Museum which houses 2000 musical instruments, and nice Harp exhibit. The pianist performed Edvard Grieg, a famous Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide.
Topping off the day, the AZAMAZING Evening, all the Journey guests were transported to the lovely Olavshallen concert hall and were gifted with an outstanding performance by a renowned chamber ensemble, Trondheimsolistene. The Trondheim Soloists are known for playing in a distinctly energetic and ‘open air’ style that’s characteristically Norwegian. Much of the ensemble’s resonant and rustic playing is influenced by Trondheim’s position at the heart of Norway’s folk-fiddle scene. The group was founded by a musician to cultivate a Nordic playing style connected to indigenous mountain music.
We were enthralled with the group’s sensational performance, the energy, skill, and spirited music.
This is a tradition Azamara offers on every voyage — always a very special experience, well choreographed and executed complete with a musical and champagne welcome reception on the pier. Thank you Azamara!
